Pinokio, One-Click Install For 200+ AI Tools

Pinokio on my Linux box for one-click ComfyUI, Whisper, and Stable Diffusion installs, the workflow that worked

Pinokio is the AI app launcher I install on machines I hand to people who want to play with AI tools but do not want to manage Python venvs, CUDA versions, and pip dependency conflicts. It packages 200+ open-source AI projects (ComfyUI, Whisper, Stable Diffusion, AudioCraft, Tortoise TTS, and more) as one-click installs. I ran it on the ThinkCentre for two weeks of casual experimentation. This is the install, the projects worth trying, and the cases where Pinokio is the wrong shape.

What you'll build

Pinokio installed on Linux, Mac, or Windows, with three AI tools (ComfyUI, Whisper, and an LLM frontend) installed via the one-click flow and running. Roughly 25 minutes including downloads.

Prerequisites

  • Linux x86_64, Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel), or Windows 10/11
  • 16GB RAM minimum (Stable Diffusion alone wants 8GB+)
  • 50GB+ free disk (image-gen models alone are 4-8GB each; you accumulate fast)
  • Optional Nvidia GPU on Linux/Windows for image-gen acceleration

If you only have CPU and 8GB RAM, stick with the LLM and Whisper tools; image-gen at full quality is rough on CPU.

Step 1, install Pinokio

Download from pinokio.computer for your platform. Mac and Windows are stock installers. Linux is an AppImage:

Pinokio first launch

The launcher creates ~/pinokio/ for installed projects. Each project is sandboxed in its own subdirectory with its own venv, so dependencies do not collide.

Step 2, browse the tool catalogue

In Pinokio, click "Discover". The catalogue shows curated projects with screenshots, install size, hardware requirements, and a one-click install button.

For first-time users, I recommend starting with three: ComfyUI (image generation), Whisper WebUI (speech-to-text), and a chat-with-LLM app. These cover the most common "I want to try AI" use cases.

Step 3, install ComfyUI

Click ComfyUI in the Discover tab, click Install. Pinokio downloads ~2GB of code, sets up a Python venv, and pulls a default Stable Diffusion model (~4GB). Total install runs to ~7GB.

Click Start. ComfyUI launches in a new browser tab. You can drag node graphs immediately; the default workflow generates a simple image.

Step 4, install Whisper WebUI

Search "Whisper" in Discover, install. The Whisper WebUI install is smaller (~3GB) because the model is pulled at first transcription, not at install.

Click Start, the WebUI opens. Drag-drop an MP3 or click the mic to record. The transcription appears with timestamps.

Step 5, install a chat tool

Search "Text Generation WebUI" (oobabooga) or "Chatbot UI". Install, start. You get a familiar chat interface.

If you already run Ollama outside of Pinokio, you do not need this; the chat tools inside Pinokio reinvent some of Ollama's wheel. They are useful as a self-contained "I have nothing else, give me chat".

First run

A typical first-day Pinokio session for a new user:

1. Install Pinokio (5 min)
2. Install ComfyUI, generate a few images (15 min)
3. Install Whisper, transcribe a podcast clip (10 min)
4. Install a chat tool, talk to a 7B model (10 min)
5. Decide which of these are useful and uninstall the rest

Total time-to-AI-fluency for non-technical users: roughly 1 hour.

The leverage is letting a non-technical person try four AI categories in one hour without learning any setup.

What broke for me

Two real issues. First, on my Linux box without an Nvidia GPU, ComfyUI installed but image generation took 90+ seconds per image on CPU, which kills the playful experimentation Pinokio is supposed to enable. Switching to a smaller model (SDXL Turbo or LCM-LoRA) brought it under 15 seconds per image, but the default model is too heavy for CPU. Pinokio does not warn you about this at install time.

Second, on Ubuntu 24.04, two Pinokio-installed projects started fighting over CUDA library versions in their respective venvs. The symptom was random crashes when running ComfyUI right after Whisper. The fix was launching only one Pinokio project at a time; for true parallelism, separate machines or Docker (which Pinokio's design avoids) are the right answer.

Pinokio itself is free. The disk usage is the surprise; running 5 image-gen projects consumes 30-40GB of model weights alone.

When NOT to use this

Skip Pinokio if you live in a terminal and prefer pip + venv yourself. The launcher abstracts away choices you might want to make explicitly (specific model versions, specific Python versions).

Skip if you are running serious production work. Pinokio is for experimentation and casual use. For production-grade ComfyUI or Whisper, manage the install yourself with a clear dependency lock.

Indian operator angle

For Indian content creators and small studios wanting to evaluate generative AI without committing to API bills, Pinokio is the cleanest survey tool. The one-click installs let you try image-gen, voice-gen, and music-gen in an afternoon, decide which fits your workflow, then commit to a real install of the chosen tool.

The disk usage is the constraint for low-spec Indian boxes. With a 256GB SSD common at the budget tier, installing 4-5 Pinokio projects fills the disk quickly. Plan for an external drive if you intend to keep many tools resident.
